Relationships

Read about the Golden Rule to treat others as you would want to be treated:

  • Confucius said, “What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others” (Analects XV.24, tr. David Hinton).
  • Brihaspati said, “One should never do that to another which one regards as injurious to one’s own self. This, in brief, is the rule of dharma” (Mahabharata 13.113.8).
  • The T’ai Shang Kan Ying P’ien says, “Regard your neighbor’s gain as your own gain, and your neighbor’s loss as your own loss.”
  • The book of Leviticus records God saying to Moses, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18).
  • Jesus referenced or quoted that thought from Leviticus multiple times (Matthew 7:12; Luke 10:25). Later, He added to it by saying, “As I have loved you, so you also must love one another” (John 13:34).
  • As recorded in the hadith, Muhammad (prayers and peace be upon him) said, “As you would have people do to you, do to them; and what you dislike to be done to you, don’t do to them” (Kitab al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 146).
  • Bahá’u’lláh said, “Ascribe not to any soul that which thou wouldst not have ascribed to thee, and say not that which thou doest not.”
  • The Wiccan’s understand that the Mother Goddess said, “That which ye deem harmful unto thyself, the very same shall ye be forbidden from doing unto another, for violence and hatred give rise to the same” (The Book of Ways).

How does God treat us? How should we treat others?
